There’s no logo that’s better-known among boating anglers than the hull-and-harpoon-framed trademark of Boston Whaler. It’s distinctive of boats ranging from 13-foot side-console skiffs to a 42-foot center-console. Dual-consoles, pilothouse boats and express cruisers complete the line.

The “Unsinkable Legend” was born as a dream of Dick Fisher more than 60 years ago. That dream became the now-classic 13-footer, completely foam-filled for strength and unsinkable buoyancy. Today, every Boston-Whaler model boasts this unsinkable attribute.

Boston Whaler 365 Conquest

The powerful, stylish, and comfortable 365 Conquest is a premier, all-season vessel—an offshore fishing machine ready for any quarry, as well as entertaining friends and families.

The boat’s modern design exudes style and versatility. It’s ready for cruising to dockside shops and restaurants, anchoring overnight in a quiet bay, gathering the family for a multiday getaway, or just relaxing at a sand bar.

Then, of course, the 365 offers outstanding seakeeping, plenty of power, and abundant angling amenities for far-flung fishing adventures.

The boat balances formidable fishability with luxury touches that are sure to please everyone, things such as a two-part aft table that stores easily when not in use, part of a customizable aft deck.

The passenger-side seat faces a 19-inch Simrad multifunction display and contains a storage compartment. The seatback is reversible to create a lounger, pairing with a reversed (otherwise) rear-facing seat that can be optioned to house a drawer-style refrigerator, and a pull-out bench seat.

The helm features twin 19-inch Simrad MFDs. Behind the captain is a galley, with enhancements optional. Reverse-cycle air conditioning provides cooling and heating for seasonal comfort.

The premium cabin, with berths for up to five, has hullside windows and deluxe seating and sleeping accommodations, plus abundant storage. Two buttons convert its table and seats into a comfortable master berth.

Notable options include a gyrostabilizer, an upper station, a diesel generator, joystick piloting, a retractable sunshade, a premium audio system, underwater lights, and a transom summer kitchen with a freezer.

Standard power comes in the form of triple Mercury 400 hp V-10 Verado outboards. Another option is twin 600 hp V-12 Verados.

Editor’s Note

With the optional tower and second station, you can turn the 365 Conquest into a righteous bluewater warrior, ready for tournament fishing. And once you defeat a big tuna, use the starboard-side door to slide your prize into the cockpit. -Jim Hendricks

Capt. Wil Rogers, director of large boat sales, walks us through the Boston Whaler 50th Anniversary Edition 420 Outrage.

To celebrate the 50th birthday of Boston Whaler’s original Outrage fishing boat, the company debuted on Thursday the 420 Outrage Anniversary Edition at Chelsea Piers Marina in New York City. The 42-plus-footer features updated styling, the latest in technology and an array of stellar options.

The original Outrage, introduced in 1971 and now a collectible icon, delivered state-of-the-art fishing features at the time, but the new flagship 420 puts 50 years of innovation on display.

“The new 420 Outrage is a pure expression of boating capability,” says Boston Whaler president Nick Stickler. “For boaters seeking a higher level of luxury, comfort and performance, it’s on a plane all its own.”

Most noticeable at first glance: This edition features three of Mercury’s new 600 hp V12 FourStroke Verados. And with a fuel capacity of 700 gallons, the 420 offers extensive range for traveling and overnighting.

The Skyhook/autopilot keypad at the helm delivers effortless station-keeping, and the Seakeeper gyro stabilizer evens out any boat roll. Combined with a black hardtop-frame package, upgraded bolsters and seating, quality interior finishes and teak accents, the 420 has presence. It also knows how to fish.

The 420 features a deluxe leaning post/bait-prep center, an insulated 40-gallon livewell, numerous rod holders, a freshwater sink, tackle storage drawers, and a solid countertop. An additional 24-gallon well resides in the port aft corner.

An optional flybridge with full helm controls, VesselView screen and DTS throttle-and-shift gives captains a height advantage for fish spotting. Anglers can also choose from radial, premium Gemlux, or competition outriggers.

Whaler will hold a series of kickoff events — the Homecoming Tour — which will stop at locations along the East Coast from now through October. A special reunion is set for Sept. 10-12 in Quincy, Massachusetts, where the first Outrage is still in use by the Marine Biological Laboratory. The Anniversary Edition vessel can also be seen at the Newport, Annapolis and Fort Lauderdale boat shows.

The new Boston Whaler 250 Dauntless offers sleek lines and a layout that will please serious anglers as well as friends and family that just want a fun day on the water. Courtesy Boston Whaler

At first glance, the new 250 Dauntless from Boston Whaler seemed too pretty to fish, too comfortable, too dandy to get bloody. With all the fine day-boating features, its fishing armaments are nearly concealed, like a professional gambler’s pearl-handled derringer. Never assume this Boston Whaler 250 Dauntless is unarmed.

Boston Whaler 250 Dauntless offshore
Like all Boston Whalers, the 250 Dauntless boasts an unsinkable hull. With a 250 Mercury outboard, it is capable of 51.9 mph. Courtesy Boston Whaler

Whaler had powered my test boat with a Mercury 250 hp V-8 outboard that pushed it to a top speed of 51.9 mph. If it wasn’t propped for speed, it was definitely propped for the hole shot, coming on plane in 2.6 seconds. Anglers with a big crew or fishing skinny water will appreciate that quick acceleration. But Whaler built this boat for more than just bay fishing. With its 25 feet of running surface and that renowned unsinkable status, the 250 Dauntless undoubtedly will find its way offshore.

Boston Whaler 250 Dauntless livewell
Among the many fishing features on the new Whaler 250 Dauntless is a 35-gallon livewell concealed under the aft casting deck. Courtesy Boston Whaler

Serious anglers will appreciate the ample 35-gallon livewell with its blue painted interior, lighted for night fishing. It is hidden beneath a hatch flush in the center of the aft casting deck and flanked by stowaway seats also tucked beneath flush-mounted hatches. For even more casting room, Whaler placed the boarding ladder in the extended aft casting deck and, you guessed it, tucked beneath a flush hatch on the starboard side. The port side hatch provides access to the battery, battery switch, fuse block, pumps and other rigging elements in bilge.

Boston Whaler 250 Dauntless helm seating pod
The 250 Dauntless features drawers and cabinets for tackle storage under the helm seating pod. Courtesy Boston Whaler

Whaler also thoughtfully engineered the rod holder placements. One pair flanks the leaning post and two additional pairs are set in the aft deck, one pair per side. They could be used for shotgun rods or flat lines. Even the leaning post features six rod holders in the sleek pod and beneath them, I found space for utility boxes, tools and gear.

Boston Whaler 250 Dauntless bow seating
There’s an inviting lounger for two on the forward console with rod storage underneath. The forward casting deck can also be converted to lounging space with the addition of upholstery cushions. Courtesy Boston Whaler

The gracious nature of the Dauntless’ cruising features conceals all those fishing armaments. The double lounge molded into the forward console is a luxury first in a fishing boat of this size. Underneath the lounge, I found more rod stowage. Passage between that and the casting deck is generous.

Read Next: Boston Whaler 240 Dauntless Pro Boat Test

Remove all the cushions, and your step up to the deck is comfortable, with secure footing, thanks to its non-skid surface. Backrests fold up from under the bow deck cushions, making for a pair of forward-facing lounges. Grab rails recessed into the gunwales provide safety for the seated (there are grab rails for the aft jump seats, too). Storage and an insulated cooler beneath keep the crew organized and refreshed.

And the captain gets a dual, thickly bolstered and upholstered leaning post seat that offers ergonomic comfort seated or standing behind the generously sized helm station and beneath the optional hard top. Combine all this with Whaler’s reputation for unsinkability, and you have a boat that each family member can truly enjoy.

Boston Whaler balances its 60-year tradition of building unsinkable hulls with its ongoing refinement of boats built on those hulls.

The Boston Whaler brand encompasses seven distinct lines.

Super Sports are peppy load-and-go funsters. Montauks are classic, ever-popular center-consoles 15 to 21 feet. Dauntless models balance watersports and coastal fishing.

Vantage dual-console boats aim first at family-friendliness. The Conquest family has fishing-focused offshore boats with all the comforts of home. Realm 35- and 38-footers blend center-console fishability with cabin-cruiser comfort. And Boston Whaler Outrage boats are battle-ready offshore-fishing machines.

Second among primary-boat brands owned by our survey respondents, and among those most numerous of second and third boats owned by those respondents, Boston Whaler is also one of the top two brands respondents would consider for their next purchase.

Boston Whaler 280 Vantage

The new Boston Whaler 280 Vantage does so many things so well that the company calls the family-friendly dual-console boat the “Swiss Army knife of boating.”

The 280 has a degree more deadrise and a bit sharper entry than its predecessor, the 270 Vantage, for an even dryer, more comfortable ride for the entire family, no matter the activity.

But the 280 Vantage has its eye clearly on fishing, with two aft 25-gallon cockpit fish boxes, lighted 19-gallon transom livewell (92 percent of dual-console anglers in our survey said one’s enough; 75 percent say they usually carry just a few dozen baits), three gunwale-mounted rod holders (59 percent of respondents need four or fewer), plus four more on hardtop supports. Want more, Whaler can add them for you.

Anglers and cruisers alike will enjoy the secure feeling created by a coaming height 2 inches taller than the 270. So especially will parents of young children.

Dual-consoles and our survey respondents are all about the bow seating, and the 280 Vantage’s includes cushions with backrests and armrests atop insulated storage lockers. You can add a bow sunshade or table. A bow redesign accommodates both an anchor windlass and a shore ladder.

An integrated hardtop with tempered-glass windshield can be fitted with an electrically actuated cockpit SureShade and includes a standard tow bit perfect for watersports.

Standard are twin Mercury 250 hp V-8 Verados; options include up 400 hp Verados.

405 Conquest

Ready for top-flight fishing or cruising is the Boston Whaler 405 Conquest.

The big cruiser’s cabin contains a master berth with inner-spring mattress, plus a midcabin guest berth, teak cabinets and flooring, enclosed head with separate shower, and galley with cooktop, microwave, refrigerator/freezer, storage—and even lighted wineglass holders.

The angler is served by a transom prep area and a 19-gallon pressurized, lighted, insulated aft livewell. (Of walkaround respondents, 85 percent said they need just a single bait tank.)

The 405 has five gunwale-mounted cockpit rod holders —34 percent of walkaround survey respondents say they’re OK with four; another 46 percent would like six. Five more rod holders line the transom, six more on the hardtop supports. The 405 is also set up for outriggers and/or downriggers.

The stern bench folds away to add fishing space, the setup 48 percent of walkaround survey respondents prefer. Other seats are convertible, facing front or aft.

Optional on the 405 Conquest is Seakeeper gyrostabilizing, which 24 percent of prospective walkaround boat buyers said they’d consider.

The 280 Outrage offers rugged comfort and capability. Boston Whaler

For cruising, watersports or, of course, serious fishing, the Boston Whaler 280 Outrage combines functionality, flexibility, and comfort. And of course, it’s unsinkable.

Power comes from a standard pair of 250-HP V-8 Mercury Verado engines, with Digital Throttle and Steering (DTS) and hydraulic power steering; optional power ranges up to twin 400s, with Joystick Piloting available at every power level. Recessed electric trim tabs and indicators are standard; available is Active Engine Trim, a Mercury option that automatically adjusts drive trim based on speed.

Twenty-three degree deadrise delivers a stable ride, and 28-inch interior freeboard provides safety and a feeling of security.

The helm panel provides space for two 12-inch displays. Instrumentation is by Mercury, with several Ramarine navigation packages available. Optional deluxe helm seating includes an adjustable captain’s chair and stationary companion seat, both with folding arm rests and bolsters.

Optional deluxe helm seating includes an adjustable captain’s chair and stationary companion seat, both with folding arm rests and bolsters. Boston Whaler

A T-top is standard; a premium hardtop package includes tempered glass windshield with a power-actuated vent, bow and cockpit floodlights, rod holders, speakers, electronics box and life jacket storage, and it’s outrigger-ready.

Cabin entry at starboard accesses, via fold-down step, a roomy enclosed head/storage space with portable head with pump-out, courtesy light, and easy-clean liner.

The 280 Outrage’s large open bow features a sundeck lounge with armrests, atop a massive storage bin for which dive tank holders are available. Reverse-C-shaped social seating across the front accepts optional cushions, and a cushioned filler/teak table serving both those seats and the sundeck.

Beneath the bow seats are storage spaces, including lockable rod storage. More storage is in-floor. Split bow rails are optional.

Boston Whaler 280 Outrage bow storage
Beneath the bow seats are storage spaces, including lockable rod storage. Boston Whaler

Anchor, davit, handle, cleat and anchor locker rest beneath a gas-assist lid, which is also part of an expansive non-skid casting platform. A low-profile anchor windlass and chain are available. Cleats are recessed, and a pair of deck-mounted rod holders stand ready. Forward coaming bolsters are available within a Comfort Package.

Come fishing time, nine stainless steel rod holders are mounted in transom and aft gunnels. A thirty-gallon livewell in the aft port corner keeps bait lively, and two 54-gallon in-floor fish boxes, with pump-out, await your success.

Helping make that happen is a deluxe leaning post with bait prep area: sink, spray nozzle and two more surface-mounted rod holders, all fronted by a handy grab bar. The prep station features a 30-gallon pressurized livewell with clear lid and blue interior (an optional refrigerated bucket can replace it.). An optional cooler slides into the leaning post; otherwise, three tackle storage drawers fill that space. A bench seat with backrest is available, too.

Within the cockpit, on each side a pair of rods can be stashed in under-gunnel horizontal rod holders, and a two-drawer aft tackle storage center is on the port side. A two-person stern bench folds cleanly – and easily – away to stretch already generous fishing room.

Fishability is prominent, but swimmers and divers will love the built-in transom swim step/platform, with grab handle and covered telescoping swim ladder.

The 280 Outrage is trailerable, its package length with engines up 38’3”, width 9’4”. Boat covers and side curtains are among canvas options.

The Boston Whaler 420 Outrage merges massive comfort, legendary seaworthiness, and cutting-edge features and accents. Boston Whaler

The Boston Whaler 420 Outrage, the unsinkable flagship of the line, offers sumptuous luxury for onboard entertaining and cruising—but doesn’t let anything get in the way of its big fishability.

Sure, there are comfortable seating for well over a dozen—half that number in the helm area alone—and cozy amenities in the bow, cabin and beyond, plus powerful Dynamic Running Surface hull performance ahead of a four-pack of powerful engines.

But there are also hard-fishing features and space, plenty of fishing space.

Aft, the wide transom bench folds away to make room for the fight of the fiercest fish (or to rig rods in preparation for such a fight); its back remains in place to provide a secure and reassuring bolster.

Rod holders seem to be everywhere: three rocket launchers per side on top supports, nine stainless-steel rod holders along aft gunnels and transom.

The 420 Outrage offers a 24-gallon aft livewell/baitwell, a fish-welcoming port dive door and two huge in-floor fish boxes. Boston Whaler

The 420 Outrage boasts a 24-gallon aft livewell/baitwell to port, a fish-welcoming port dive door—as handy for releasing fish as landing them—and two huge in-floor fish boxes for which freezing plates are available. There are also three undergunnel rod holders, plus storage shelf with downrigger weight holders.

The leaning post and bait-prep center includes a cutting board, electric grill, refrigerator, storage, freshwater sink with hot and cold water, and an insulated 40-gallon pressurized and lighted second livewell, with a viewing window.

The helm area alone seats six comfortably—three on adjustable captain’s chairs, three or four more on an innovative bench that can face forward for shared adventure in transit. Each helm seat and bench position is served by an individual air-conditioning vent. A standard Sunbrella canvas cockpit sunshade deploys electronically.

From a chair, or standing on a fold-down platform, the captain pilots the 420 Outrage and its quad Mercury Verado 350s or 400s aided by a Mercury SmartCraft VesselView display. Digital throttle and shift keeps all four engines in sync with the touch of a single lever, those powerful engines fed from a range-extending pair of 300-gallon fuel tanks. The Joystick Piloting system is available, and the console accommodates three large displays. Other options include Seakeeper gyroscopic stabilization and a full upper helm station.

Boston Whaler 420 Outrage bow seating
Fronting the console, fold-down armrests serve a three-across sun deck, with its foot section topping compartments that can become a fish box or tank-friendly storage bin. Boston Whaler

A sun deck at the console front contains three fold-down armrests. Its footrest houses bins that can hold fish or gear—or flip up to create a second rank of forward seats which, with the wraparound bow seating, surround the electrically deployed cocktail table.

Rails line the wide walkways to the bow, and gunnels house storage compartments. (And don’t forget about fishing: there are stainless-steel rod holders mounted within forward gunnels too.) Bolsters ring the boat.

The cabin offers a generous 7 feet of headroom, with a V-berth that converts into a dining center. Refrigerator, double sink and microwave oven await snack- or meal-making. A skylight provides natural lighting, and a 28-inch flat-screen TV offers entertainment. The enclosed head features an electric VacuFlush toilet and enclosed shower with rain-shower spray head—another touch of elegant comfort on this massive, fishing-ready machine.

The new Boston Whaler 380 Outrage is more than an upgrade of an earlier model. With transom deadrise increased to 23 degrees, and a narrower, wave-slicing entry, this spacious, unsinkable center-console sets its own course with an exceptional offshore ride.

It’s an even better way, then, to get to where the fishing is.

“Spacious” seems to be a salient adjective in describing the 380 Outrage, whether describing walkways forward, seating space, cockpit fishing room or in-console comfort. Even interior freeboard is a generous 29 inches.

The big double-seat sun deck has three drop-down armrests, a center with drink holders and a stash bin with electronics connections. A storage compartment beneath it is more practical now, with horizontal rod storage moved to within the cabin.

Remove cushions from an optional, electrically deployed teak table, and you’re ready for lunch. Remove the seat cushions too, and it all becomes a spacious—there’s that word again—nonskid casting or cast-netting platform.

(Forego the table, and you get a third in-floor fish box with macerator.)

The redesigned helm station is positioned starboard, the offset wheel on the hull’s centerline. Console entry is just port of the helm, which many prefer to side or front entry.

Within the skylighted cabin is a microwave, sink and seating that becomes a berth; rubber-backed cushions reverse to hold storage tubs without slippage. Rod racks line the walls. The enclosed head has a toilet, teak seat, shower wand, and flip-down hooks on which drying foul-weather gear is a breeze, thanks in part to heat/AC vents.

Helm seating accommodates three, with air conditioning and molded-in footrests. The captain’s seat is electrically adjustable, while the passengers’ are mechanical. A fold-down platform provides a higher standing piloting position.

Facing the foldout transom seat across the cockpit, another bench faces aft; its seat flips up to access storage and flips back down to become a teak table. Boston Whaler

Tinted glass surrounds the helm on three sides, with an electrically actuated vent in the curved windshield. VesselView, Active Trim and other electronics are mounted above the windshield. The dash and panel houses switches, heat and air-conditioning vents, Fusion stereo, spotlight control, and digital throttle and shift binnacle, as well as accommodates two large screens.

Overhead storage for life jackets or optional foul-weather canvas has generous headroom beneath it.

Joystick Piloting system is optional, as are a tower, Seakeeper gyroscopic stabilizer and outriggers.

Access the hardtop by ascending stairs and sliding open a hatch; a tower option includes double-wide seating under a second, smaller top, as well as an abbreviated array of navigation display, radio and other controls.

The 380 Outrage comes standard with triple 300 hp V-8 Mercury Verado engines, with options up to quad 400s and Joystick Piloting.

Seven stainless-steel rod holders line the transom and cockpit gunnels alone—indeed, gunnel-mounted rod holders ring the boat—and the hardtop adds six vertical rod holders. Boston Whaler

Cockpit fishing space measures a generous 45 square feet, atop large refrigerated in-floor fish boxes with macerators. Toe rails contain cannonball holders. Seven stainless-steel rod holders line the transom and cockpit gunnels alone—indeed, gunnel-mounted rod holders ring the boat—and the hardtop adds six vertical rod holders. A divider in the 60-gallon transom livewell keeps bait types separate.

Facing the foldout transom seat across the cockpit, another bench faces aft; its seat flips up to access storage and flips back down to become a teak table. (You can add another cockpit table, and a Summer Kitchen package is another option.)

The sturdy dive door opens wide to admit fish—or folks from a floating dock or the water, aided by a stowaway ladder and swing-out grab bar.

Boston Whaler’s 325 Conquest is known as the “SUV of the Sea.” Boston Whaler

Just because one likes to fish, one need not give up creature comforts. Proof is in Boston Whaler’s 325 Conquest, which the company calls its “SUV of the Sea.”

As do the best of its automotive counterparts, this new member of the Conquest line of ruggedly beautiful boats adds a layer of luxury and sophistication.

The unsinkable hull takes on big water, the helm provides a superb level of command, and the cockpit is absolutely fishing-friendly. Then come cruiser-style amenities. No need to make the difficult decision between a fishing boat and a cabin cruiser—this boat is ambidextrous.

The cockpit can entertain, but fishing is at its heart. Grab a rod from the holder on a roof support (optional), bait it from the insulated, lighted aft livewell, and post it in one of seven stainless-steel transom- and gunnel-mounted rod holders. (Outriggers are an option.)

Fishy action seems almost guaranteed. At battle’s end, the starboard dive door opens wide, so you can drag aboard the catch to take up residence in one of two 40-gallon in-deck fish boxes. Gaff, boat hook and scrub brush stow in a portside storage compartment.

Out of the way when fishing’s underway, flip-up cockpit seats (optional) accommodate several passengers. Another foldout bench seat can replace the fishing/boating tools compartment, and an optional midcockpit table stashes handily in a dry bilge/maintenance compartment.

At the helm, a single-piece glass windshield provides superb visibility, above a panel with room for a pair of widescreen electronics displays. The windshield/hardtop system features electrically actuated vents, a floodlight, dome light, rod holders, courtesy lighting, speakers and washer/wipers. Add optional full side glass for protection from the elements.

The captain, on a manual, fore/aft slide rotating seat, oversees a pair of 300 hp Mercury Verado engines (available up to 400 hp each), with joystick piloting optional. Additions can include open-array radar, a heat system, underwater LED lighting, air conditioning and a bow thruster. The Cruising package adds a dockside water hookup, electric single-burner stove and water heater.

Head below to savor luxury in a cabin boasting a private midboat double berth and a convertible V-berth sleeping/dining area, full-height hanging locker, and deckhouse windows. Overhead, folding horizontal rod racks keep precision fishing tools at ready and in mind.

Standard in the galley are a refrigerator, Corian countertop, microwave and sink with a faucet, all beneath a skylight. Fusion stereo is standard, and a 26” TV is optional. The head compartment houses a toilet, sink and shower, as well as a mirror and screened porthole.

Up top, confidence-building handrails enclose a spacious forward sun lounge.

To port of the helm station, two seats can face each other, with a gas-assist, high-low wood-topped table between them. With a few quick moves, the table drops, and the rear-facing front seat reverses to face forward. From there, one can place the cushions on the half-height table and have an “instant” lounge unit.

Aft of the captain is a prep station with sink; an optional Summer Kitchen package adds a refrigerator, Corian countertop, and pullout grill with a cutting board and drawers.

That fish-admitting dive door we mentioned a bit ago? With its stowable swim ladder, it’s cherished by folks who’ve taken a dip or dive too.
